5 Simple Ayurvedic Habits For Winter

Ayurveda teaches us to pay attention to the season's energies and act in ways that balance these energies. If, like me, you live in the Northern Hemisphere, it's currently the middle of winter. The main energies of winter are dry, cold, and light. To balance this, think moist, warm, and heavy.

5 Simple Ayurvedic Habits

How can we bring more balanced energy into our daily habits?

  1. Avoid cold drinks. Instead consider drinking warm drinks such as herbal tea or warm cider. Even room-temperature water is better than water with ice cubes.

  2. End your day with a nice warm bath.

  3. Try Abhyanga. Don't panic, it's just a fancy Sanskrit word that means self-massage. While you can do abhyanga with dry hands, in winter it's usually a good idea to use warm oil. Tell me a warm oil massage doesn't sound like an amazing winter treat. Follow it with a warm shower or bath for good measure.

  4. Put stew on the menu. Any liquidy, warm, heavy meal will bring balance to the dry, cold, light energy of winter. If stew isn't your thing, try mac 'n cheese, pot roast with gravy, or chili!

  5. Honor your bedtime. It gets dark early in winter and that's your cue to crawl into your warm cozy bed and enjoy a good night's sleep.

These habits aren't complicated and are just common sense. However, time and time again we ignore what we know and that often leads us out of balance. Embrace the season, and stay healthy, happy, and balanced with Ayurveda.
